Why Tie Your Shoelaces Correctly

There are certain things you do each day because you simply have to do it. Tying your shoes is one of them. You probably could even do it with your eyes close, but are you doing it properly ? Are you being friendly to your feet and shoes? Read on and find out.

Thinking of the Health of Your Feet

Shoes are meant to protect your feet from the environment. Of course you know that. Well-fitted shoes help you move more freely and naturally. It will also protect you from having foot problems. Shoelaces keep your shoes well-fitted. Even if your shoes fit your feet, they still will not be well-fitted unless you tie your shoelaces the right way. Loose shoes due to wrongly tied shoelaces could create friction between your feet and shoes. This could result to blisters, bunions and sores.

Avoid Accidents With Shoelaces Tied the Right Way

Whether you are wearing walking or running shoes, having loosely tied shoelaces is like flirting with danger. Your shoes could get off your feet and you will be walking barefoot which could hurt your feet. You could easily trip on your shoelaces and hurt your knees. A bad fall caused by loose shoelaces could even cause your head to hit the pavement.

Make Your Shoes Serve You For Years

When you don’t tie your shoelaces the right way, you will be subjecting your shoes to too much torture. There is no better way of taking good care of your shoes than to walk in it normally and naturally. When done otherwise, your shoes will tend to be overworked.

There is nothing like wearing shoes with shoelaces tied the right way. Other than not having to go through the hassles of frequently re-tying your shoelaces, it could save your feet and your shoes a lot trouble. Some people, though are not aware that there is indeed a right way of tying shoelaces.

You could generate some laughter when you ask a colleague at work about the right way to tie shoelaces. For sure he would reply that it is a very elementary thing and everyone knows how to tie shoelaces. Ask him if he knows how to tie a shoelace correctly and he might just give it some thought.

Tie Shoelaces for Good

You probably have been on your knees a zillion times to re-tie your shoelaces but never bothered to find out why they always got untied. You just simply re-tied them again. Wouldn’t it be great if you would only tie your shoelaces once and walk or run freely without bothering about having to re-tie them? Here are some surefire ways:

  • Make a bow horizontally across the shoe.  Making a horizontal bow is sturdier than a vertical bow and is most like to get untied. By the way, horizontal bows look neater and more beautiful than vertical bows.

Terry Moore, a scientist of the Radius Foundation says he believes most people are not tying their shoelaces the right way. He shows the Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED.com) show the right way of tying a shoelace. Watch this YouTube video. Notice how the audience was a bit shocked at what he was going to demonstrate.

  • If you are wearing running shoes, you will notice that there are additional holes for laces at the top. Almost no one makes use of those extra holes. They are often taken for granted. Well, if they are there, there must be a good use for them!  Those extra holes are there so you can loop back the shoelace tighten them. Shoelaces of running shoes need to be tied correctly at all times. A loose pair of running shoes affects your strides. When your shoelaces are too tight, you can get a pinch or two from your shoes.
  • Use a Windsor knot. It’s your usual knot except that you make a knot over the first knot. It is something like making a double lace. To finish off the knot, you bring the loop to the top and tighten it.

A Windsor knot, sometimes called surgeon’s knot is often used in in neckties. Neckties stay in place the whole day. Tying your shoelaces in much the same way as a necktie would guarantee they too would stay in place until you need to untie them.

As it is also referred to as a Surgeon’s knot, it is a sturdy knot. Can you imagine what would happen if your surgeon did not stitch you up the right way?
